Go Zip Lining in Njegusi Zip Line !

I love zip-lining. Fun fact, I have a fear of heights, but I LOVE overcoming that fear and doing extremes like zip-lining, parasailing and more. I just love the adrenalin, total addict.

Anyways, this zip line location isn’t that famous apparently, because we’ve searched everywhere online to see if there are any zip lines that are not located in North Montenegro, and only after digging deep in Google, we’ve found the β€œNjegusi Zip Line”.

WOW. What an adventure! I can’t explain how fun it was!

I don’t know how long the zip line exactly is, but it was pretty long, between two mountains, and an insane view in front of us. It was INSANE. I don’t think there is any other way to describe it.

We did it twice, because it was that fun!

It only costs 10 Euros, which isn’t bad at all. Also, some useful information – it opens every day at 9:00 a.m and closes at 7:00 p.m.

Mount Lovcen National Park

Lovcen Mountain and national park is the inspiration behind the name of Montenegro – Monte = mountain, Negro = black = the black mountain

The inspiration behind the country’s name was first mentioned in a charter issued by Stefan Milutin in 1276, the name Montenegro, as I explained, was deriving from the appearance of Mount Lovcen when covered in dense forests.

It was proclaimed as a national park in 1952. There are some important sites in the Lovcen National Park, including the Niagos mausoleum, Peter Petrovich Niigoshi, the Montenegro state thinker.

The mausoleum is at the summit of Mount Lovcen, at a 1,657 meters point, where the king used to be recuperated, and where he wished to be buried, due to the breathtaking views of Montenegro that you can see from that point.

The national park encompasses the central and the highest part of the mountain, covers an area of 62.20 km2.

At Lovcen Mountain you can find old houses and village guvna that are authentic, as well as the cottages in Katuns. A specific architectural relic is the road, winding uphill from Kotor to the village of Njegusi, the birthplace of Montenegro’s royal family, the house of Petrovic.

Also, I think it is worth mentioning, that in Lovcen Mountain you can find 1,158 types of plants.

Take A Tour In The Lipa Cave

Lipa Cave is a karst cave situated close to Cetinje in the mountains of Montenegro. It is one of the largest caves in Montenegro, and the first cave in the country that is opened for tourists, after the project of cave’s valorization.

Exploration of the cave began in the 19th century. During the Austrian occupation in the early 20th century, the cave had a strategic importance, with Austrian soldiers widening the entrance to gain access to drinking water.

Also, in the late 20th century a deeper part of the cave was discovered.

Fun story, at the cave the tour guide told us that for some reason this cave was forgotten, and people didn’t know much about it until it was found again by A DOG. What?

A dog went on a trip in the woods, in the mountain, and suddenly fell into a hole in the ground. After a while, the dog’s owner came looking for him, and when he found him, he rediscovered this amazing cave!

First, you arrive at the Lipa Cave office. You have a nice coffee shop with an amazing view of the mountains, and from that point, the tour begins.

To get to the cave they take you on a β€œtrain” that drops you off in the entrance to the cave.

And this is the pretty view from the coffee shop:

Important information to know before visiting Lipa Cave:

1. Its 8-celsius degrees in the cave. Bring warm clothes, even if its the middle of August! it’s just freezing in there. And also, they give you raincoats that cover your whole body, but it still isn’t warm enough, so don’t forget bringing warm and long sleeve clothing!

2. Lipa Cave is open from 10:00 a.m – 4:00 p.m during May-October, and during April through 10:00 a.m – 2:00 p.m.

3. First tour starts at 10:00 a.m and the last tour at 4:00 p.m. (or 2:00 p.m. if you are visiting during April). And every tour is 60 minutes.

4. There are also extreme tours inside the cave, they are at different hours though.

5. A ticket costs 10.90 Euros.

Explore Cetinje

Cetinje is Montenegro’s old capital city and is located right under the Lovcen mountain.

What to do in Cetinje:

There are many things to do in Cetinje – you can visit Montenegro’s National Museum, The President’s official residence, the Ministry of Culture and so much more!

Also, Cetinje hosts many festivals every year. The biggest one is is β€œSummer at the Old Royal Capital”. It is an artists festival with around 100 events, which held from June to September.

During these months visitors can attend the gigs of regional artist stars at the most significant city locations, but in the villages as well.

There are many festivals and events during the whole year, like β€œChristmas Concerts” (7/8 January), Independence events on May 21st, and so much more.

Lake Skadar

After visiting Lake Skadar it became one of my favorite places on earth.

I am telling you, there is no way you are visiting Montenegro and not visiting Lake Skadar. I feel like not visiting this lake is like going to Paris and not visiting the Eiffel Tower.

Information abut the lake:

Lake Skadar is the biggest lake in Southern Europe. It shares a border with Albania – two-thirds of the lake is Montenegro’s, and a third of Lake Skadar is Albania’s. The lake is named after a city in Albania – Shkoder.

I recommend visiting the lake through Virpazar. It is a lovely little town, located right on the lake. And if I didn’t say, it is a magical little town!

There are some nice restaurants, prices aren’t the cheapest because it is a highly visited tourist area.

Now, it’s time to tour Lake Skadar!

Rent a boat and take a tour of the lake:

In Virpazar there are many boat renting companies, you only need to pick one. But, I wanted to recommend the company we rented from. It is called Kingfisher Boat Cruising, and I highly recommend them.

First of all, nice people, I think the nicest I’ve met on this trip. Second, their prices are good, and they do the best they can to make you happy and enjoy the lake.

They even gave us a small discount and β€œbuild” a customized route for us (for no extra charge).

So, you rent a boat, get a driver that is also kind of a tour guide. There are private tours (like we did) or group tours with more people on it.

Honestly, being our family alone was a lovely experience for us, and we enjoyed it even more. I highly recommend going on a private trip. For us (a family of 4), it was the same price as going on a group board, so we decided to go on a private tour.

During the tour, you also have specific stops that you can jump in the water and swim ! in August the water in the lake was much warmer than in the ocean, I’ll tell you that.

It was such an amazing experience, and like I said earlier, visiting Montenegro and not exploring Lake Skadar is like visiting Paris and not visiting the Eiffel Tower!

And here are more beautiful pictures of the lake:

Walk Around And Explore Podgorica

Basic information about Podgorica:

It is Montenegro’s capital city, and also the biggest city in the country. The name originates in 1326 and it is built amongst five rivers – the Zeta, Moraca, Ribnica, Cijevna and Sitnica.

Most of the city was actually destroyed during WW II, so the city is relatively new, and has modern buildings, green spaces as well as parks.

Also, Podgorica hosts a few cultural events and has many theaters.

What to do in Podgorica:

1. Stara Varos – an old Turkish town. You can walk around, explore the old town, visit the old clock tower. You can spend here a few hours.

2. Trg Republike – Podgorica’s main square, located near the Hercegovacka Street. A lovely area, full of life and people during the evenings. Lots of cheap restaurants, friendly people – a lovely place to spend the early evening in Podgorica.

3. St. George Church – Was built in the 10th century on the slopes of the Gurice Hill, which is named after the town of Podgorica.

4. Millennium Bridge – an impressive new bridge that is built over the Moraca river. Many people say this is Podgorica’s best attraction, especially for families.

5. King Nikola’s Castle – it isn’t a magnificent castle-like in other countries, but if you are visiting Podgorica with kids that haven’t seen yet any castles, it is nice to take them on a tour and explain that this was the castle of Montenegro’s king.

6. Church of the Holy Heart Of Jesus – this is a catholic church that is located next to the train station outside of Podgorica’s central area. This is a lovely, pretty church, don’t miss your visit here.

Monastery Of Ostrog

This is a very religious and special place to the Montenegrins. The Monastery of Ostrog is a monastery of the Serbian Orthodox Church that is located high up in the large rock of Ostroska Greda, in Montenegro. It is dedicated to Saint Basil of Ostrog, who was buried there.

From the monastery, there is an amazing view of the whole area.

This is a very interesting place, not only that this the most important place in Montenegro, the view from there is amazing, as well as the building itself, the church is hewn in the mountain, which is so pretty and special.
